Position Overview

 

Reynoldsburg City Schools (RCS), a school district recognized throughout the state for its forward-thinking and progressive culture, is seeking a Shop Mechanic for the Transportation Services Department.  The District has a student enrollment of ~7,000 students and maintains a bus fleet of ~58 buses.  The Shop Mechanic is part of a team responsible for maintaining and servicing the District bus fleet and other vehicles. This position reports to the Shop Manager of Transportation Services.

Characteristic Responsibilities:

 

The characteristic responsibilities and duties of the Shop Mechanic include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining a safe and reliable bus and vehicle fleet
  • Providing inspections, service, repair, and upkeep of the District bus fleet and vehicles in sound mechanical condition. This includes the implementation of a preventative maintenance and general maintenance program as well as providing immediate maintenance
  • Evaluate mechanical problems using various diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems to include but not limited to engines, transmissions, chassis, suspensions, electrical and cooling systems, exhausts, chair lifts, etc.
  • Prepare and maintain bus fleet according to the State of Ohio Highway Patrol bus inspection requirements
  • Responsible for maintaining records of all preventative maintenance and general repair work to include creating, tracking, and closing out work orders in an electronic fleet maintenance system
  • Perform preventative maintenance procedures (e.g. oil changes, brakes, tire rotation, lights, PMI safety inspection, etc.) including cleaning outside of vehicles for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and meeting mandated requirements
  • Does major mechanical, welding, and body repair within the limits of the available tools and equipment
  • Performs minor body work (e.g. front ends, fenders, bumpers, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe Operation of District vehicles
  • Responds to service calls regarding disabled vehicles for the purpose of performing emergency repair work in the field
  • Must keep accurate inventory records through an inventory tracking system
  • Ensures the compliance on a day to day basis with State, Federal, and District requirements. Ensures a safe environment exists and that all maintenance and related activities are in conformance with District policies and regulatory requirements
  • Responsible for the operation of the Garage Shop in the absence of the Shop Manager
  • Helps keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule (if needed) as well as may be required to be on-call on nights, weekends, and during severe weather
  • Performs such other duties as assigned by the Shop Manager

Required Certifications, Education, Philosophies, and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED desirable
  • 2+ years’ experience in fleet maintenance
  • Knowledge of transit vehicles and related equipment, parts/maintenance manuals, and preventative and corrective diesel maintenance procedures
  • Skilled in the use of the various manufacturer’s types of diagnostic equipment
  • Required to have own mechanic tool set
  • Valid Driver’s license - Addition
  • Knowledge of basic computer operations – Moved from preferred

Preferred Certifications, Education, Philosophies and Experience

  • CDL Operator’s license with required endorsements or the ability to obtain – Moved from Required

  • Other related certifications to diesel/ gasoline engines or air brakes – Moved from required

Terms of Employment.

  • Twelve (12) month, full year contract with hourly rate as established by the Board based on experience and qualifications
  • Individual must successfully be able to meet the requirements of a BCI/FBI Background Check
  • Reynoldsburg City Schools is a Tobacco Free District in which the use of tobacco products is strictly prohibited on District property
